Jameson Hardy '19 performs at Sydney Opera House
Jameson Hardy ’19 recently performed at the iconic
Sydney Opera House. Jameson, a CA Town Scholar, was among 250 high school students from around the world selected for the
Honors Performance Series music event. More than 1,200 students applied. Jameson performed with the concert band. He also got a chance to tour Sydney and visit Bondi Beach and the Blue Mountains.
Charles Jalbert ’19 attends advanced medicine and healthcare forum
Charles Jalbert ’19 performed simulation surgery, visited the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Shock Trauma Center and networked with many prominent doctors and medical researchers last month.
Jalbert said the experience confirmed his dream to pursue a career as a neurosurgeon.
“I learned so much,” he said. “Cheshire Academy helped make this possible. It brings out the best in you. It wouldn’t have been possible, otherwise.”
CA faculty members visit France
French teacher Sally Pollard spent a month in France where she took an art class and also got a firsthand look at the country’s celebration of a World Cup title. Pollard shared video clips of the celebration at the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Also, fellow language teacher Nicole Burnett was among 35,000 in attendance at the Stade Chaban-Delmas in Bordeaux, France, for the World Cup final.
Connecticut Flute Orchestra to feature Grace Sun ’19 composition Grace Sun ’19 will have her composition titled, “A Leaf’s Journey” debut at the Connecticut Flute Orchestra’s “Mostly Connecticut” concert on Sept. 16. Grace’s piece will be played along with those from Yale and Wesleyan music professors. Grace is currently attending the prestigious Walden School’s Young Musicians Program. The rigorous five-week program accepts just 50 students and is held in Dublin, New Hampshire.
CA students receive science and engineering program scholarships Mazie Lebowitz ’19 and her brother, Jacob Lebowitz ’19 received scholarships to participate in the
Verna J. Kirkness Science & Engineering Education Program at the University of Manitoba. The six-week program exposed Native Americans to scientific research.
Mazie Lebowitz worked in a chemical protein lab analyzing which proteins had the greatest antioxidant properties. She also attended the National Native American Youth Initiative in Washington D.C. The week-long event was designed to prepare and motivate students to pursue a career in healthcare and biomedical research. This month, she also participated in a neuroscience program at McGill University.
CA student learning Hebrew at Tel Aviv University Danielle Schloss ’19 is taking part in the Hebrew Ulpan program, an intensive six-week language course at Tel Aviv University. In addition to learning Hebrew with students from around the world, Danielle is getting a taste of Tel Aviv’s culture and learning about the beautiful city’s history.
CA attends West Hartford yoga event
Laura Longacre, Cheshire Academy’s Chief Academic Officer, Ally Breen ’19, and Gina Breen, Ally’s mother, attended the eighth annual Om Street yoga event in West Hartford Center. About 3,000 yogis attended the event, which is organized by West Hartford Yoga with support from more than 40 yoga studios across Connecticut.
CA teacher walks Camino de Santiago
Wesley Simon, IB Language and Literature teacher, spent five weeks this summer walking the Camino de Santiago.
The large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretches across Europe and comes together at the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. She followed the Camino Francés route, walking nearly 450 miles over 35 days.
Simon said she wanted to challenge and immerse herself in the Spanish culture. She’s excited to share the experience with CA students this year.
Solar printmaking coming to CA
CA art is going green. Art teacher Karleen Kubat is excited to introduce solar printmaking to CA students this year. Karleen attended a solar printmaking workshop this summer taught by master printmaker Dan Welden at the Truro Art Center in Cape Cod. She learned how to create etching-like, chemical-free prints using solar plates. Students will now work from photographic images or their own creative designs without the chemicals typically used to make etchings.
Jenna Denomme '19 attends creative writing program
Jenna Denomme ’19 spent three weeks at Sarah Lawrence College’s Writer’s Village this summer. This creative writing workshop for high school students was led by members and guests of Sarah Lawrence’s celebrated writing faculty. Denomme lived on campus, which is located in Bronxville, New York, and took classes in poetry and fiction. The program also included readings, craft talks and free writing periods, which were designed to supplement learning in the classroom.
