  • Tennis - Varsity (B)

    2018 - 2019
    Head Coach: Robert Boyd

    Team Philosophy
The main emphasis of the varsity program is to enjoy and benefit from the game of tennis.   Tennis truly is a sport for a lifetime, so the number one goal is to promote within all players the seeds of desire to play tennis for all of their physically active years.  Reaching this goal involves development of technique, appreciation for and pursuit  of a high level of fitness, learning how to win and lose with dignity and respect , learning how to handle and ultimately overcome the stress of competition and, most importantly of all, learning how to keep it all in perspective and have fun.

    Team History
Cheshire Academy has an extraordinary tennis history.   In the late 1920’s, for example, two roommates- Sidney wood and Frank Shields - were destined to meet in the Wimbledon Men’s final a few years later.   In the late 1940’s, some very strong teams were led by future USTA president and school trustee David Markin.  In the late 1960’s, the team was led by future US Open participant and current trustee Lendward Simpson.  In relatively recent years – 1998 and 1999 - we were winners of the New England Open Division Team Tournament.  We have also been participants in the class “A” tournament four times since 2002, most recently in 2011.  In most years, we field a competitive team against a very challenging schedule.
    Season Outlook
This year will an interesting developmental year.  We will have only two seniors in the top 10 positions on the ladder and will welcome an elite young player onto the team as well.  Three of last year’s top 6 players will return.   The main goal will be to keep a positive and exciting atmosphere that will make things fun as well as motivate all players to improve and set high goals for themselves and the future of the team.
