  • Seniors help vault girls’ team to strong 3rd place finish at the NEPSAC Championships.

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, nine female athletes drove out to compete against 18 other Division III schools. Seniors; Kamila Zygadlo ’19, Dani Schloss ’19, and Cat Mattio ’19 helped open the doors early in the meet, and never the team never looked back. Zygadlo PRed in both the shot and discus, placing 3rd in the shot and 1st in the disc with a throw of 92’10”. Our trio of vaulters; Schloss, Mattio, and Annsley Martin ’20 had the most exciting event of the day, as they placed 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Early in the contest, Martin broke the school record with a jump of 8’0. 14 minutes later, Schloss would go on to break the new record with a jump of 8’6”. Due to a tie, Schloss was forced into a five jump, sudden death, jump off, and would eventually fall to the number 1 seed. Martin’s day would not end at pole vault, as she and Katie Welage ’21 jumped their way to a fourth and fifth place finish in the triple jump, with both girls PRing. Welage also PRed in the Long Jump by over a foot! Our lone runner to place was first time runner, Maria Alzaga ‘20, pushed herself to a fifth place finish in the 1500m with a time of 5:38. Julianna Fazzino ’21, Ava Tonnotti ’21, and Maddie Silano ’21 rounded out the girls’ day by running three legs of the 4x100 and competing hard in the 100m, long jump, and 400m. This was a truly remarkable season for our girls. They came out, worked hard, and understood what it would take to be successful. The future is bright for this young Cats team.

    Team Philosophy

For the Cheshire Academy Track and Field team, boys and girls practice together as part of a program that emphasizes individual and team growth. Each athlete is allowed the flexibility to compete in the events of their choosing, with the encouragement and council of their coaches. The Track and Field program is one of the largest on campus and works hard to make the program feel more like a family than a team. The coaching staff tailors each practice to fit the athletes’ individual needs; whether they are a thrower, jumper, sprinter, distance, or mid-distance runner. The program believes in taking athletes where they are and supporting their growth while only asking athletes for two things in return; to try their hardest and support their teammates.

    Season Outlook

The 2019 Cheshire Academy Track and Field team returns with many familiar faces, along with a few new ones, all with their eyes on success. Anchored by our returning athletes, our girls look to bounce back after taking fourth in the NEPSAC Division III Championships in 2018. Our boys look to climb back as well, after taking first in 2016. With a strong core already set, the Cheshire Academy Track and Field family will look to their new comers to bolster the ranks and provide the team with depth.
